PAMELA DEE VANCAMP
June 8, 1947 - May 12, 2012
Pamela Dee VanCamp, 64 of the Point Place/Shoreland Community, passed away in her home with her loved ones by her side on May 12, 2012. She was born in Toledo, Ohio on June 8, 1947 to Roy and Joan (Sheets) Frakes. She was retired from the Jeep Corporation after 32 years of service. Pam was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. She spent a great deal of her life helping others, and receiving many awards for her community service. Pam had a passion for helping people. In 1978, she became the Director of a grassroots organization known as Toledo United Against Rape, Inc. (TUAR). Under her dedication and direction, TUAR grew and expanded into the Rape Crisis Center (RCC) located in downtown Toledo. Under Pam's leadership, the RCC program became one of the largest full service Rape Crisis Centers in Ohio and was the first Center in Toledo to offer Victim Services. Pam was a pioneer in the movement and worked tirelessly to move Victim Services forward. Through her efforts and insight, services were expanded to meet the needs of not just victims of sexual assault but also Victim Services in general. Respected and admired, Pam served on various boards and organizations at the state and local level. She was a member of Ohio Coalition on Sexual Assault (OCOSA), the National Victim Center, Ohio Victim/Witness Association, the Lucas County Sexual Abuse Task Force, the Lucas country SART Task Force and the Lucas County Victim/Witness program. She also served as the Chair of the Coalition for Victim Support and Advocacy and with the efforts of several other organizations planned and celebrated the annual Victim's Vigil held during Victim's Right Week every April. Because of her knowledge and expertise, Pam also served as a Consultant for Rural Opportunities, Inc. and the University of Toledo Sexual Assault Education and Prevention Programs. Pam also lent her talent and skills to the RCC Gift Wrap fundraiser located at the Northtown Mall. Her favorite saying was “if you can get it through the door, we will wrap it” much too many volunteer's disbelief! Leaving the Center in 2006, Pam said that she “will always remember and be proud of what I was a part of…” Following her career, she spent several years helping her son at Toledo Carpet and Janitorial Company.
