The summer of 1949 Robert Sr. took his three boys on a vacation to the Smokey Mountains and Washington D.C. in his 1937 Ford.
Lena Rife foster home was a large old farmhouse located on Rt. 64 between Haskins and Bowling Green Ohio. The house, chicken coop, garden, cow pasture, and apple orchard were on one side of the road and two barns were on the other. There was a large creek running in front of the house. There was no running water, only a well with a hand pump in the front yard. There was an outside toilet. Other foster children lived there as well. The bedroom was on the 3rd floor.
To catch the school bus, required about a ¼ mile walk to the nearest crossroad. Chores included milking cows, feeding chickens, hoeing weeds, picking corn, bailing straw, hay, and doing housework around the house. Later, Lena Rife opened her home on Sundays, to the public, to serve chicken dinners. This required chickens to be killed, dunked in hot water, and their feathers removed.
Recreation included swimming in the creek, listening to country music on the radio, attending old fashion ice cream socials, and watching movies on the side of the grain elevator in town. Once in awhile we would sneak "Old Dutch" beer, hide it in the cornfield and drink it warm the next day, and smoke corn husk. Our father would visit us every other weekend.

Rural Education Fails
To Post Pupils On Skunks
2 Youngsters (Ronald & Donald Meyerhofer) Play With White-Striped 'Kitty"
And Delay Session
Haskins, Ohio, Jan. 18. Two grade school pupils from
Bowling Green, who have been boarding at a farm home near here, hadn't been
warned of "cats" with white stripes on their backs. While waiting for a
Haskins school bus near their home, they began to play with a
white-striped "kitty" Richard Gennson; bus driver failed to detect
anything unusual when they boarded the bus, but soon other bus riders
began to complain of a sickening odor. Older pupils gained permission
to leave the bus to walk the remaining half-mile to school, but first and
second-graders are barred by regulations from leaving the bus.
When the bus reached school, Mr. Gennson was given hasty permission
to return the boys to their home. After a scrubbing and change of
clothing the boys were permitted to return to school to continue their
education, which was scheduled to include information on Skunks.

The Zion Methodist Church at 525 Segur Avenue was sold in 1950 and a new Methodist church was built on Beverly Drive in Toledo. All Meyerhofer's were dropped from the church membership rolls at this time.
On May 9, 1950, Robert Sr. married Ardahrene Mildred Underwood. They bought a small, four-room house on a 1-¼ acre lot near Swanton, Ohio for $5,000 and the three boys moved in August 1950.
The house had two bedrooms, a living room, front porch, and a kitchen. There was no running water, a coal burning stove, and an outside toilet. A back porch, running cold water, and an oil stove were added about 1953.
The three boys attended Swanton Township elementary school. Quite often, Robert Sr. took the three boys to visit Elsie in Temperance, Michigan The kids were always goofing around. There was never a quite moment.
The boys were very active in the Explorer Scouts. Attended "Camp Miakonda" scout camp, in Sylvania, Ohio, for two weeks each summer.

1957 Nancy Wiles
It was at a basketball game that Donald first noticed a good-looking cheerleader. It was love at first sight. Nancy Wiles and Donald dated throughout High School. On our first date we went on a hayride. When Nancy was fourteen and I was sixteen she was driving my car when the Ohio Highway Patrol stopped us for "one arm" driving. He requested I do the driving and let us go. Nancy would later become my wife.

Ronald and Donald were discharged from the Navy in June 1962, and moved to an apartment in Toledo, Ohio. Donald bought a 1954 Ford. Nancy and Donald started to date again. Ronald bought a 1957 Ford and went to work at Cable and Wire Products in Swanton, Ohio. Donald enrolled in the University of Toledo Junior College, Associate Engineering Aid Program.
Ronald decided to make the Navy a career and re-enlisted in the Navy for another six years. Donald moved back home to Swanton for a very short time. Donald took Ronald's old job and continued to go to school at night. Ronald very seldom returned home. In 1958 Robert Jr. was fired from Sherlock's Bakery for stealing money. He apparently was using the money for his addiction to slot machines. Robert Sr. was embarrassed and devastated. A lot of hateful words were exchanged between the two of them. Robert Jr. left home and took a job in Lima, Ohio selling books. At sometime he returned home. In 1961, after a lengthy illness, and another disagreement with his father over unpaid medical bills he left home for good. Robert Jr. was not man enough to say he was sorry and make amends with his father. Robert Sr. and Robert Jr. never spoke or saw each other again. In 1971, Robert Jr. disowned the Meyerhofer family. Only he knows why he disowned his brothers and sister. Only Donald and Elsie would visit and keep in touch with their father.
After twenty-three years working at Sherlock's, Robert Sr. lost his job. Sherlock's management wanted the drivers to buy their own trucks as a cost cutting measure. The drivers refused and the bakery closed. This was the beginning of some very hard time for him. Robert Sr. refused to work for a competitor like Nickel's or Tony's Bakery. Unemployed for quite some time, Roose Brothers, in Rossford, Ohio hired him as a clerk in their floor covering shop. In 1970 Food Town Bakery hired him as a shipping and receiving clerk. In 1980 Robert Sr. retired from the Bakers Union at the age of 65. Robert Sr. and Ardahrene lived on a small combined social security pension of $1,500 per month during their retirement years.
Robert Sr. had a very good sense of humor. He loved to joke around, especially with merchants. He loved to go bowling and play cards. He seldom drank beer or alcohol. He never flew in an airplane or traveled far from home. He never attended church as an adult. He liked to putts around the house and do yard work. He had few friends. The world passed him by. He lived a very simple life.

Poor circulation in his legs, a large open sore on his heel that would not heal, congestive heart failure, suffered a stroke, and had lung cancer. In poor health, Earl and his wife moved into his home to care for him and Ardahrene until his death.
